UWA TRAVEL UPDATE: NEW GORILLA FAMILIES, GOLDEN CAT TRACKING & EASIER PERMIT PAYMENTS

Planning a safari in Uganda or dreaming of coming face-to-face with mountain gorillas? There are some important new updates from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that will shape how you plan your trip — and make your experience even better.

From newly opened gorilla families in Bwindi to a rare golden cat tracking experience in Kibale, plus a smoother payment process for permits, these changes are designed to improve both booking and on-ground experiences.

The updates were officially announced by UWA Executive Director, Dr. James Musinguzi, on April 14, 2026.

What’s New for Travelers?

Here’s a quick summary of what’s changed:

  • A more efficient and transparent payment system at UWA headquarters
  • Two newly habituated gorilla groups now available for trekking
  • A brand-new golden cat tracking experience in Kibale National Park

If you’re planning a Uganda safari, these updates are worth knowing before you book.

Simplified Permit Payments at UWA Headquarters

Booking permits is now more structured with the introduction of a new payment system at UWA’s Kampala office. An Inplant Machine has been installed to handle all cash transactions for permits and other services.

What this means for you:

  • Payments are processed within 24 hours
  • Once confirmed, your booking is finalized immediately
  • Office hours are Monday to Friday (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) and Saturday (9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)

This system improves efficiency and transparency, but it also means you should allow a little extra time when securing your permits.

More Gorilla Trekking Opportunities in Bwindi

Uganda’s iconic gorilla trekking experience has expanded with the addition of two new habituated groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:

  • Happy Gorilla Family – Buhoma sector
  • Nshanjare Gorilla Family – Rushaga sector

These groups are now fully available for booking through UWA.

While this slightly increases the number of trekking opportunities, permit numbers are still strictly controlled to protect the gorillas. That means availability remains limited — and booking early is still essential.

For travelers, this is great news: more chances to experience one of Africa’s most powerful wildlife encounters in a responsible and sustainable way.

Discover Golden Cat Tracking in Kibale National Park

Looking for something beyond the usual safari activities? Kibale National Park now offers golden cat tracking, a rare experience that takes you into the forest in search of one of Africa’s most secretive predators.

This activity is conducted in the Kanyanchu area along Ngogo Road and is ideal for travelers who want a deeper, more exclusive wildlife experience.

Key details:

  • Booking is done on-site only
  • Reserve at least 24–48 hours in advance
  • Cost is $350 per person for a five-day tracking window
  • You’ll need your own guide, while UWA provides ranger support

Because sightings are rare, the experience is less about guarantees and more about the thrill of tracking and understanding this elusive species.

Why These Updates Matter for Your Safari

These changes reflect a bigger effort by UWA to improve visitor experience while maintaining strong conservation standards.

You get:

  • Easier and more reliable booking processes
  • More access to gorilla trekking permits
  • New and unique wildlife experiences beyond the traditional safari

In short, it’s now easier to plan — and more rewarding to explore.

Travel Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Secure your gorilla permits well in advance — they sell out quickly
  • Factor in the 24-hour payment processing time when booking
  • Plan ahead for golden cat tracking through your lodge or tour operator
