Mgahinga National Park is a protected under the Virunga conservation area. The Virunga Conservation area covers a total area of about 434km2. Virunga conservation area consists of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. The Virunga conservation area is the only celebrated area in the world that hosts Uganda Rwanda Congo mountain gorilla trekking Safaris. Given Uganda’s share of the Park, Mgahinga National Park covers 8% of the Virunga conservation area with an area of about 33.7sq.km. Mgahinga National Park outspreads between 2,227meters (7306ft) and 4,127meters (13540ft) above sea-level.

Mgahinga National Park was declared a sanctuary in 1930 by the British administration and gazetted as a park in 1991 governed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). UWA took over this park to protect the rare primate mountain gorillas and golden monkeys that inhabit the dense forest. Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi National Park are the only parks in Uganda that protect mountain gorillas hence hosting a very good number of visitors for unforgettable Uganda gorilla trekking safaris.
