Mgahinga National Park is a protected under the Virunga conservation area. The Virunga Conservation area covers a total area of about 434km². Virunga conservation area consists of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. Mgahinga National Park was declared a sanctuary in 1930 by the British administration and gazetted as a park in 1991 governed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). UWA took over this park to protect the rare primate mountain gorillas and golden monkeys that inhabit the dense forest.
