Getting to Mountain Elgon National Park Uganda – How to Access Mountain Elgon National Park Uganda
How to get to Mountain Elgon National Park Uganda
Mount Elgon National Park lies 235km east of Kampala. A tarmac road runs through Jinja to Mbale town at the western base of Mount Elgon, before climbing to Kapchorwa on the mountain’s north-western flank. Dirt roads lead off the Mbale-Kapchorwa road to reach the various trailheads.
These are series of massive basalt cliffs lying on the northern and western parts of Mount Elgon. The most popular are the three waterfalls at Sipi – Kapchorwa district, just outside the park. The lowest of these falls is the most astounding as it cascades over a 100m cliff. The second, famous as Simba, plunges 69m over the entrance to a cave. Visitors can stand in the cave and enjoy a view of the back of the falls. The third waterfall, also known as Ngasire, gushes over an 87m high ridge. Sipi Falls is less than an hour’s drive from Mbale on a paved road.
Easily accessible waterfalls are also found at Sisiyi, Bulago, Chebonet and Wanale and many more are scattered across the mountain, offering spectacular views.
Tewei Hill; Tewei hill is located outside the park overlooking Sipi Falls .The hill is considered to be the place where in1960s King of the Sabiny Chemonges Kingo, used to meet his subjects. From the top of the hill one can enjoy the views of the three falls Sipi falls, the Karamajong plains and the Wagagai peak.

The most fascinating is Panel Two which includes two canoes bearing human figures.
Mt. Elgon’s supports a wide -range of vegetation which is differentiated into broad zones whose characteristics or features are mainly determined by rainfall and altitude of the area. The lower mountain slopes are covered or occupied with dense forest and regenerating forests, hung with vine-like lianas, epiphytes and lichens. The floor is covered or blanketed with a carpet of ferns, flowering plants and orchids. The most dominant tree species confronted in the tropical montane forest (1,500-2,500m asl) are olive, Elgon teak, podocarpus, Oleahochstetteri, prunus africanas cedar, Cordia, allophyllus tombea, Neoboutania, and Aningueriaadolfi-friedericii.
As altitude change to 2,500-300, the vegetation zone changes to mixed bamboo. The bamboo merges and occupies the open woodland and the common tree species here include hagenia abyssinica and African rosewood interspersed with hypericum – a giant form of St. John’s wort.
The heath zone (3,000-, 3500m) is characterized or featured by giant heather interspersed with grassy swards of blonde tussock grass decorated with pink and white everlasting flowers, flame-colored gladioli, blue delphiniums and red hot pokers.
At an altitude of 3,500-4,321 above sea level, the moorland or Afro-alpine zone consists of plant species like senecio elgonensis, Erica tree, giant lobelias with hairy leaves and plumes of tiny blue flowers, ladies’ mantle tussocks (archimilla elgonesis) and pink and white everlasting flowers. The summit of the mountain is vegetated by rare Afro-montane species that include giant forms of lobelia and groundsel.
Mountain Elgon national Park supports an enormous range of wildlife including rock and tree hyraxes, buffalo, Defassa waterbuck, elephant, oribi, bushbuck, duiker, forest hog, bush pig, leopard, civet and serval cats, serval cats, spotted hyena; aardvark and several rodent species. However these animals are rarely observed in the forest setting. The most easily seen wildlife creatures are the black-and-white colobus; baboons; red tailed, vervet, De Brazza’s and blue monkeys; duiker and tree squirrel.
The mountain is acting as natural home to an estimated 300 birds including 40 restricted bird range species. Also 56 of the 87 Afrotropical highland biome species thrive in the park, commonly the Moorland Francolin, Alpine Chat and Moustached Green Tinkerbird.
The bird species endemic to Mountain Elgon national park include the Jackson’s Francolin and Black-collared Apalis and those found in the Elgon and other mountainous areas of eastern Uganda include the Black-shouldered Kite and Tacazze Sunbird, African Goshawk, Chubb’s Cisticola, White-chinned Prinia, African Blue Fly-catchers, Chin-spot Batis, Mackinon’s Fiscal, Doherty’s and Luhder’s Bush-Shrikes and Baglafecht Weaver. The park is one of the few birding destinations in Uganda where the endangered Lammergeyer species can be seen, soaring above the caldera and Suam Gorge.
Forest Exploration Centre
The Centre is located 13kms from the nearest Sipi town and it also acts as an educational Centre for schools travellers visiting the park for study purposes .It’s also the trailhead for climbers using the Sipi trail to hike to the caldera. Three circuits of between 3-7km pass through the surrounding regenerating forest, where tourists can visit caves, waterfalls, escarpments and viewpoints; and observe different birds and primates. Bird species found here include Hartlaub’s Turaco, Eastern Bronze-napped Pigeon, African Hill Babbler, Lemon Dove, Dusky-Turtle Dove Alpine Chat, Black-throated Wattle-eye, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Thick-billed Honey guide, Grey Cuckoo-Shrike.
Mount Elgon is home to three tribes ie the Bagisu, the Sabiny and the Ndorobo. The Bagisu and the Sabiny are subsistence farmers and conduct circumcision ceremonies every other year to initiate young men (and in the Sabiny’s case, girls) into adulthood. Traditionally, the Bagisu, also known as the Ba-Masaba, consider Mount Elgon to be the embodiment of their founding father Masaba, and you may hearn the mountain called by this name. Local people have depended on forest produces and have made agreements with the park to continue to harvest resources such as bamboo poles and bamboo shoots (a delicious local delicacy).
Mount Elgon’s slopes are covered with stunning caves left by moving lava and erosion of soft volcanic deposits. The most famous and easily accessed through forest Exploration Centre is Kapkwai Cave and Khauka Cave on Wanale Ridge. These caves have cultural and historical attachment to the locals and their livestock because they used to act as shelters for the local community members. More recently the caves have been used by hikers or climbs and their respective potters when hike to the summit of the mountain. Different campsites are located at Hunters Cave, Siyo Cave (near the hot springs), Mude Cave and Tutum Cave and they offer overnight expeditions to the hikers.
Jackson’s Pool and Jackson’s Peak
Jackson’s Pool is natural pool with shallow waters and this straddles at 4,050m. This pool lies in the shadow of the 4,165m high Jackson’s Peak, a free-standing volcanic plug rising from the western flank of the mountain. These features or landmarks were named after the first European explorer Frederick Jackson to hike to the summit of the Mountain in the year 1889. Jackson’s peak is used by the locals around the park as a spot or point they base to communicate with their ancestors.
The peaks and the caldera
Mount Elgon’s highest peaks are formed by high points around a jagged rim enclosing one of the world’s largest calderas, at 40km long and 8km wide. The highest peak is the 4,321m Wagagi, followed by Sudek (4,303m), Koitobos (4,222m) and Mubiyi (4,210m).
The Caldera found in the park was formed as a result of magma being drained from the chamber. When it could no longer support the overlying volcanic cone, it collapsed into a depression-like shape. In the eastern corner of the caldera, hot springs are found at the start of the deep Suam Gorge. In the northwest, Simu Gorge was formed by the sheer weight of the water in the caldera cutting two stream beds out of the weak volcanic ash and agglomerate walls.
Nkokenjeru Ridge & Wanale
Nkokenjeru Ridge is a distinguishing finger of forest stretching outwards from the main massif of Mount Elgon. It lies at an altitude of 2,347m and covers a 25km-long tongue of lava that flowed out of the side of the volcano after the cone collapsed or fell down to block the main vent. Nkokenjeru Ridge culminates at the superb Wanale Cliffs which tower above Mbale Town; the seasonal Nabuyonga and Namatyo Waterfalls are located here. A trail at this western end of the ridge leads you to Khauka Cave where petrified wood can be found. This ridge also provides grounds for those travellers interested in paragliding over the Mbale town.
The Nabuyonga Trail is a 5km loop with birding, fauna and flora. Viewpoints overlook Mbale town, Lakes Kyoga, Bisina and Salisbara, and the rugged mountains in Karamoja region. On a clear day, you may enjoy vistas of Wagagai peak and even areas of western Kenya. Beware of throwing a stone into the Nabuyonga stream – local folklore claims that if you do so, a thunderstorm will strike before you leave.
